Karmali, S., Chahar Bagh

The Roundhouse Community Centre,
May 22-26 2007, Vancouver, Canada

Chahar Bagh was commissioned by the Ismaili Provincial Council for British Columbia as a production to mark the Golden Jubilee of His Highness the Aga Khan. It portrays the multiple heritages and migrations of the Ismaili community in Canada. A musical, the play focused on classical Indian dance vocabularies to tell stories that transcend the barriers of language.

Sikeena’s prose is sprinkled with Urdu and works like a charm. The book almost feels like a film and you get transported to the era and I could not find anything amiss. The vivid descriptions and sublime narration work wonderfully well for this book. Even though the book is set in multiple nations and time travels through different cultures, the transition is smooth. The author has deeply researched the subject capturing the mannerisms and intrigues of the political movement prevailing at that time.
